More about this item:

Created in 1911 by Austrian artist Moriz Jung, Hindernis Regenbogen (“Obstacle: Rainbow”) reflects the playful experimentation and graphic clarity of the Vienna Secession era. At a time when aviation was still a thrilling and uncertain frontier, Jung transforms technological ambition into visual satire—placing a fragile aircraft in collision with something as poetic and intangible as a rainbow.

The composition is sharply structured. Dense black clouds dominate the upper register, forming a dramatic backdrop against which the pale aircraft splinters in midair. The arc of the rainbow cuts diagonally across the scene in luminous bands of red, gold, and green, acting both as visual bridge and symbolic barrier. Below, a pastoral landscape unfolds in calm geometry—fields divided into rhythmic patches of green and gold, punctuated by a distant village and church tower.

Jung’s linework is deliberate and economical. Figures and forms are simplified into bold silhouettes, allowing color and contrast to carry the emotional charge. The flattened perspective and graphic blocking of space echo early modernist poster design, where clarity and immediacy were paramount. Printed using techniques that favored strong ink saturation and controlled layering, the piece retains a tactile grain that enhances its historic authenticity.

Balancing humor with visual drama, the illustration speaks to the optimism and vulnerability of early 20th-century progress. The rainbow becomes both obstacle and spectacle—a modern myth rendered in ink and pigment. As wall art, it brings together aviation history, Austrian modernism, and playful symbolism in a composition that feels as fresh today as it did in 1911.
