More about this item:

This vibrant textile design emerges from Japan’s Meiji period, a transformative era when centuries-old artistic traditions met rapid modernization and new global influences. Designers of the time began pushing pattern beyond florals and natural motifs, embracing abstraction, line, and repetition as primary visual language.

Here, undulating vertical bands flow in measured cadence across a saturated golden-yellow field. The waves alternate in width and color—deep black, earthen red, moss green, muted violet, and soft ivory—creating both harmony and tension. The composition feels dynamic yet disciplined, with each stripe carefully spaced to maintain balance within repetition. What might appear spontaneous is, in fact, meticulously structured.

Originally produced using woodblock-based textile printing methods, artisans carved repeating patterns into wooden blocks and transferred pigments onto fabric using techniques such as katazome resist dyeing. Natural mineral and plant-based dyes produced the rich saturation and subtle texture still visible in the design. Slight tonal variation and soft edges speak to the hand-crafted origins of the piece.

Expanded from textile scale into wall art, this print highlights the Meiji era’s bold experimentation with graphic abstraction. It reads as both historical and surprisingly contemporary—an energetic pattern that commands attention while honoring the precision and restraint of Japanese design heritage.
